Drama Rehearsal and Teaching Space
The construction of the New Music School gave us the opportunity to also advance the rehearsal and teaching of drama at Sherborne through the refurbishment of the original Music School on Hospital Lane in 2014.
Thanks to the support of many OS, parents and friends of the School, the space has now been transformed into a drama rehearsal and teaching space to complement the Powell Theatre performance space.
The drama department and team had not had a permanent home for some time and this building in many ways fits that need.
The Upper Floor of the Old Music School offers an ideal space for rehearsals without having to move all equipment when another user needs the Powell Theatre, and is leading to a greater cohesion for drama provision within the School under one roof.
The Lower Floor of the building is now suitable for individual drama lessons as well as a costume store and other useful spaces. It has become a place where the boys feel they can hang out and belong to the drama scene and be more creative in their own space.
Sherborne has also not been able to offer GCSE Drama for some years due to a lack of dedicated space and this is now being considered, alongside A Level Theatre Studies, for the future. Until now only A Level Theatre Studies was possible with Sherborne School for Girls.
The building also has the advantage of being set out on its own so performers can make as much noise as they wish without disturbing other lessons or being held back by the fear of others listening.
Finally, the building offers a secluded lawn at the rear with high walls, ideal for when outdoor performances are being rehearsed.
This space is giving the already excellent drama at Sherborne a significant boost and may help us find the next Hugh Bonneville, Charlie Cox, Sir Richard Eyre or Jeremy Irons among our multi talented boys.
